“Spy Quest” opens on Tom and Jerry meeting Jonny Quest. Doctor Zin finds out that Jonny’s dad has found a way to solve the Energy Crisis. So, he uses robotic animals to capture the elder quest. A few accidents later and Race is out of the picture. So, we have the non talking animals, Hadji, Jonny and Bandit fighting to get back Dr. Benton Quest. It sounds like a bit of a stretch, but it kept my attention for 73 minutes.
I never would’ve thought Jonny Quest and Tom & Jerry made sense as a team-up. But, 60s theme espionage involving animals makes sense. Basically, you’re putting Tom and Jerry back into danger…but it’s danger with a purpose. That wouldn’t have been out of place on the old Jonny Quest. You know the non funny Venture Brothers stuff before it got ruined with the Cyber themed 90s revival? I watch way too many cartoons.
The DVD comes with bonus episodes as the special features. The A/V Quality is strong for standard definition. Hell, the animation looks like it originated from an HD master. The Dolby 5.1 track is stunning for a DTV team-up movie. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to parents of young kids.
