Pee-wee invites you to the Playhouse this Christmas.
“Pee-wee’s Playhouse: Christmas Special” came along in that special time in 1988. When we were like, why is the third season so short? Paul Reubens heard our pleas and gave us a weird Christmas Special that finally united K.D. Lang and Grace Jones on the same program. This was also the first place I learned about Charo and her bizarre act.
Pee-wee learns about Christmas while playing around with Magic Johnson and making Annette Funicello do arts & crafts. The usual Playhouse gang hangs out and you even get the Del Rubio triplets. If your kid doesn’t Pee-wee yet, start them off with Season 1. This special might be a bit too overwhelming for them.
The Blu-Ray comes with a featurette and commentary as the special features. The A/V Quality is amazing for a show of its age. The 1080p transfer pops and the DTS-HD master audio mono track is true to its source. I can finally retire my VHS copy. But, before I do that…I’ll move the commercials over to YouTube for archival purposes. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
