THE PAUL NASCHY COLLECTION REVIEWED
“The Paul Naschy Collection” is made of loved films. Back when we covered the original BCI-Eclipse releases, there was a dedicated section of fans who clamored for the reviews, the DVD, etc. When I first saw these movies, most of them stuck me as softcore porn. But, I guess that was the flavor of Spanish Horror. These films feel way more sensual than most American horror, but there is a degree of aping at play. But, does that necessarily cast a dark shadow over Paul Naschy?
All 5 films play at 93 minutes or less, so I’ve got to give it up to the Spanish Horror masters. That being said, all of the films move at a marathon runner’s pace. For those of us that grew up with more Hammer than AIP, the scares might feel a bit rushed. What I found more impressive was the Visual Effects for a World Cinema production. There wasn’t a moment in the film when any visuals felt cheap. I do appreciate the Vincent Price appeal of Naschy’s work. The guy didn’t stick to any one monster or horror subgenre. If you dig that, then pick it up.
