INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE REVIEWED
“Independence Day: Resurgence” is an interesting idea for a sequel. However, ID4’s time has passed. I could see the idea of a sequel series working well on HBO, as we build deeper into the Earth Defense Force and other ideas 20 years after the 90s fan favorite. For 2 hours, all we get is a lot of setup for a sequel and a great deal of suspending disbelief. There are nuggets of gold to mine here, but Emmerich just slams through this world again without the cultural appeal of the first outing. I can see why this film won’t find an audience now, but that might be a mistake. I really, really like this world. I just don’t think features work for Independence Day anymore.
