“Hackers” is a fantasy film about hacking being an art for disenfranchised youth that want to be cool and smart. Unfortunately, they’re ADD laden spandex freaks with two dimensions and no hope. Fisher Stevens shows up in what should’ve been a human version of “The Cove”. Unfortunately, we’re not that lucky and I’ve got to luck at Matthew Lillard’s time capsule of a face throughout the picture. Angelina Jolie seemed fresh off having a Sarah Lawrence moment, but nobody seems to remember the sharp supporting turn offered by Lorraine Bracco.
The fanbase for this film has always seemed off to me. It’s like dance fans being excited over “Shag” or “Lambada”. There is kitsch appeal in a time long gone, but what else is there? Especially since it appears that the film has lasted 20 years on well wishes and non ironic viewings. But, I guess that makes me the weirdo.
The Blu-Ray comes with new interviews and a trailer as the special features. The A/V Quality is a revelation compared to my old MGM DVD. The 1080 transfer is robust for a film shot in the flat mid 90s. Plus, the DTS-HD 2.0 master audio track seems true in the front channels. But, I thought this was a 5.1 mix during theatrical exhibition. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to fans.
