Gamera: Super Monster was the first film distributed by New Daiei. It also served as the kiss-off to the classic Gamera series. When an alien threatens the Earth, it’s up to a small boy and the Superwomen to team up and kill it. The boy summons Gamera who then relies on help from his old villains to save the Earth. Given the later release date of 1980, improved special effects help this movie to look far better than the rest.
Super Monster is a goofy attempt to given classic Kaiju fans the last chance to see their favorites in action. The plot is paper thin and serves as the background to a special effects highlight reel. The kicker is that no matter what happens, the fights look amazing. I’d still take this movie any day of the week over the 90s offerings and Gamera the Brave.
Arrow brings the Gamera Collection to life with Super Monster. The special features are quite typical for the other releases in the Gamera Collection. Featurettes, commentaries, trailers, turtle soup recipes and all that stuff is present. If you’re this many discs into the mix, then jump at it.
