BLACK MAMA, WHITE MAMA REVIEWED
“Black Mama, White Mama” is one of the Filipino AIP productions in the early 70s. Taking advantage of cheap shooting conditions and the able direction of Eddie Romero, we were blessed with the golden age of Women in Prison movies. Pam Grier and Margaret Markov are capable leads in a film that could’ve been the third riff on “The Big Doll House” in as many years. Yet, something changed here.
Taking more cues from “The Defiant Ones” than softcore porn, we have two actresses who form a bond that could sustain a major motion picture. Sid Haig and others are used for laughs, but we find ourselves rooting for the leads. Jonathan Demme co-wrote the script, so I guess that counts for something. For those still worrying, yes there is nudity. The film is kinda top heavy in that sense, so you’re going to be out of luck by the end of the feature. But, Harry Betts’ original score is stellar!
