“Woman in Gold” is about the real story behind one woman’s efforts to recover her family’s fortunes. The search for identity over the decades and the battle to not let the slight go away is amazing. After all, how would you feel if someone stole your family’s heirlooms. Hell, how would you feel if it was given to Gohring and other Nazi officers? Unfortunately, the film moves past that.
Helen Mirren and Tatiana Maslany offer up a stunning look at the real Maria Altmann. Unfortunately, the other half of the film is standard legal drama. The fare doesn’t pick up, but Ryan Reynolds tries his hardest to make the straight drama work. Listen, there’s a reason that he’s Deadpool and not Oscar nominated. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
The Blu-Ray comes with a featurette, commentary, trailer and press conference as the special features. The A/V Quality is stunning for a historical drama. The 1080p transfer is sharp and shows no signs of digital noise. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track supports the full sound stage. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
