The Man I Love (1947) [Warner Archive Blu-ray review]

The Man I Love is proof that Alan Alda’s dad and Ida Lupino should have made more movies together. It’s a fun slight road trip romp about a torch singer trying to head home to Los Angeles during Christmas. While she misses her family, she discovers new friends along the way that might change her life. When you watch it, take notice of how much Scorsese borrow from it for New York, New York. What’s really impressive about this Blu-ray is that it adds back in 6 minutes to get the film closer to its theatrical version.

The Man I Love (1947) [Warner Archive Blu-ray review] 1

Ida Lupino was a great actor and director.

While Ida Lupino had been directed by Raoul Walsh and High Sierra before this film, she felt much more natural in The Man I Love. For a 96 minute long movie, it moves at lightning speed to get through the typical romantic melodramatic trappings. But, it’s also a very light Film Noir. That feels crazy to say, but it plays back and forth with so much style that it’s hard to hang one thing on it. Still, Lupino is so amazing in it.

What is on that Warner Archive Blu-ray?

Warner Archive loads up this Blu-ray with classic WB cartoons and a trailer as the special features. The A/V Quality is stunning and shows that there must have been a ton of restoration work going on behind the scenes. It’s quite the treat and well worth picking up.
