WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Spooktacular Pony Tales” is a collection of six episodes that sees Equestria enjoy Halloween. All of the Ponys dress up and they get involved in adventures. The adult fans will go out and buy new toys, while the parents of young girls stare at them with suspicion. Such is the life of the Brony and I will agree to continue studying them. What about the show? It’s good, but it’s stuff I’ve already seen on The Hub.
The Halloween compilation is supported by everything from Bats to Boast Busters and Luna Eclipsed. The thematic elements start getting thin towards the end, but kids aren’t going to care about how in-tuned the material might be to Halloween. It’s not like the Simpsons, where you have 25 episodes to mine for Halloween material. Hell, not all of the Treehouse of Horror episodes stuck to that horror format. We get a “Day of the Dolphin” and a “Diving Bell and the Butterfly” shorts within the greater timeline of the series. While some might blame that on an animated series outstaying its welcome, I applaud any show that wants to break out of its normal pattern. I don’t see Derpy that much in this release.
The DVD comes with stencils, a poster and a sing-along as the special features. The A/V Quality is on par with past My Little Pony releases. The transfer is sharp for standard definition. Also, the Dolby Surround track holds up. If you’re a fan, you’re buying it.
