HAMMER DOUBLE FEATURE: MANIAC / DIE! DIE! MY DARLING! REVIEWED
“Maniac” was probably one of the bigger Hammer productions of the era. Taking advantage of the non-spooky house locations, the film built a world. The problem is that the story is pretty tiny. It’s a romantic triangle between a drifter, a lustful woman and her blowtorch wielding murderer husband. Toss in an older woman going all super cougar and you’ve got yourself a gumbo. While it doesn’t quite fit the model of previous horror films, it was a fascinating departure for the old horror studio.
“Die! Die! My Darling!” is another relationship horror film. This time, it’s about losing love and then dealing with the insane mother-in-law. Come for the very early Donald Sutherland role and stay for the darkest soap opera set to film. I find it fascinating that Mill Creek chose these two films for a double feature. They both represent a little acknowledged side of Hammer. Now, what will it take to get an imprint to release the sketchier Shaw Brothers movies?
American geeks deserve to see the features that some studios don’t like making public. Check it out.
