“Contamination” is Italian schlock cinema’s take on “Alien”. But, they mix that love of weird eggs with the desire to throw all action into South America. Ian McCulloch plays the best drunken astronaut known to man, while Goblin lights it up with an amazing score. The film is known for its stilted FX that never quite worked. But, thankfully the editor was able to chop around it.
Luigi Cozzi is far more remembered for “Starcrash” than this film. While this movie was meant to capitalize on the post Alien craze, it created something different. Basically, it showed to the greater world that the Italians could ape any Hollywood hit to make something gross. After all, who else could make exploding eggs with green goo into something disgusting?
The Blu-Ray comes with a stunning new 2K restoration which produced a luscious 1080p transfer. You also get uncompressed PCM mono audio on the disc. There’s a brand new audio commentary, featurettes, interviews, trailer and a graphic novel on the disc. Arrow USA has brought the goods in their first year of existence. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to Italian Horror fans.
