Arcadian (2024) [Film review]

“Arcadian” directed by Benjamin Brewer, is a gripping 2024 sci-fi thriller set in a dystopian future. Recently released, this film has captivated audiences with its intense narrative and strong performances. However, the film has found little audience outside of the festival circuit and select streaming opportunities. That’s not right and I’d like to make the film a little more enticing for the casuals out there.

The film begins with Paul (Nicolas Cage) fleeing amidst the chaos of civilization’s collapse, cradling his two infant sons. Fifteen years later, Paul and his twin sons, Joseph (Jaeden Martell) and Thomas (Max Harwood), live in a remote farmhouse, finding tranquility by day but fearing the night. The brothers’ dynamic becomes apparent when Thomas, a risk-taker, arrives late from the nearby Rose farm, while Joseph, more intellectual, discusses improving their survival situation.

During dinner, they board up their home, only to hear loud banging on the door later. The next morning, they find deep gouges on the outside. Paul helps Joseph get an off-road utility vehicle running, and they practice driving it.

Thomas protests wanting to visit the Rose farm, but Paul insists on chores. Thomas sneaks off but gets sidetracked and falls into a crevice. As darkness falls, Paul searches for and finds him in a cave, deciding to stay overnight for safety.

Meanwhile, Joseph traps an intruder at home. Paul and Thomas fend off creatures in the cave, with Paul getting injured. Joseph drives to rescue them the next morning. They return home, only to face another dilemma as Joseph uncovers the reason behind the nightly attacks. What comes next will surprise you.
