The Film Society of Lincoln Center has announced acclaimed director Todd Haynes’ latest drama May December will open the 61st New York Film Festival on September 29th.
Starring Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore and Charles Melton, May December centers on a popular actress who arrives in a small island town to research the real-life woman she’ll be portraying in an upcoming project. But as she ingratiates herself with the woman, now married to a much younger man, difficult truths unfurl.
Haynes and his cast will attend the prestigious opening night North American premiere at Alice Tully Hall. Portman, Moore and Melton anchor the film with a trio of “mercurial performances” exploring the elusive nature of truth and identity, according to festival director Dennis Lim.
On the heels of films like Carol and Velvet Underground, Haynes’ new meditation on trauma, celebrity and exploitation promises to be a NYFF highlight. Single tickets go on sale September 19th following the September 9th press conference revealing the full slate.
