Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved animated classic Spirited Away is coming to life in a magical stage production, and it’s being released for at-home viewing this November. Filmed live during its acclaimed 2022 Tokyo run, the Spirited Away stage show will be available digitally and on Blu-ray starting November 14th from GKIDS and Shout! Studios.
The lavish theatrical adaptation was helmed by Tony winner John Caird (Les Misérables) and masterfully blends puppetry, costumes, music, and sets. It stars double-cast actresses Kanna Hashimoto and Mone Kamishiraishi as heroine Chihiro.
The release contains two separate filmed performances, each with one of the headline actresses:
- Kanna Hashimoto as Chihiro, with Hiroki Miura as Haku
- Mone Kamishiraishi as Chihiro, with Kotaro Daigo as Haku
Veteran actor Mari Natsuki, who voiced witch Yubaba in the original film, reprises her role on stage. Voice actress Romi Park plays Yubaba and Zeniba in the other cast.
The ensemble also includes esteemed Japanese talent like Tomohiko Tsujimoto as No-Face and Satoshi Hashimoto as boiler-room operator Kamajī.
The magical story follows young Chihiro as she discovers an abandoned theme park inhabited by spirits and monsters. After her parents turn into pigs, she must find work and her courage to survive in this strange new world.
The theatrical adaptation brings Miyazaki’s fantastical creatures to life through elaborate costuming and giant puppets. Memorable musical numbers and dazzling sets further transport audiences.
Now fans can experience the wonder at home when the digital and Blu-ray release when Spirited Away arrives November 14th.
The Blu-ray contains both stage show versions across a 2-disc set. Fans can alternate between the Hashimoto and Kamishiraishi casts.
Digital platforms will also offer both filmed performances for rental or purchase.
