THE MASK YOU LIVE IN REVIEWED
“The Mask You Live In” isn’t a complex documentary. Honestly, it’s the equivalent of a filmed listicle from Buzzfeed. Never truly citing any information or presenting any new facts, the documentary cuts between graphics and brief talking head interviews to cry about hyper-masculinity. While there are some touching stories about dealing with masculine pressures, there’s never a solid central argument. Things just happen and the audience is expected to accept everything as fact.
I don’t share UpWorthy articles because of this same schlock. The “boy crisis” is another amplified and imaginary concern of the decadent first world. There comes a time when humanity grows so stale that any aspect of itself recognized as other is treated like a malady. It’s just in decades past, I didn’t have to watch tepid documentaries about the matter. Watch it if you’re interested, but I’d recommend skipping it.
