“Love Unto Death” is such a slow, dour movie. “Life is a Bed of Roses” is a fun movie that pays tribute to French cinematic masters while having fun with the material. Love Unto Death falls apart because it wants to be so serious and yet the editing is off. If you’re going to bum me out, at least make the trip to depression that much easier. But, I’m complaining about Resnais.
“Life is a Bed of Roses” reminded me of “Mood Indigo” at times. That play between color and style creates something that makes me smile. I’m used to Resnais creating beautiful films, but there’s nothing before “Roses” that made me believe the guy knew humor. It’s kind of weird that this turn around came in his later years.
The Blu-Ray comes with commentaries and trailers as the special features. The A/V Quality is stunning like all of the other Cohen releases. The 1080p transfers are flawless. However, I don’t see the LPCM 2.0 mono track really blowing people away. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to the interested.
