Freestyle Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, has exciting news for sports documentary enthusiasts. They have acquired the North American VOD rights to the roller derby documentary Minnesota Mean. This thrilling film will debut on all North American digital HD internet, cable, and satellite platforms, as well as on DVD, starting July 2, 2024.

Minnesota Mean immerses viewers in the exhilarating world of roller derby, following the lives of six fierce women as they chase the ultimate prize, the Hydra. When the team’s star player is sidelined by an injury, the stakes are raised: can they still secure the victory? This is no ordinary sports story—it’s a raw, authentic portrayal of the tough, independent women at the heart of roller derby. It’s a triumphant tale of grit and determination, showcasing how these athletes balance the demands of the sport while pursuing their personal dreams.
Meet the Athletes
Produced and directed by Dawn Mikkelson, Minnesota Mean features roller derby athletes Brickyard, Hurtrude Stein, Smoka Hontas, Shiver Me Kimbers, Diamond Rough, and Switch Please. The documentary also features music by indie hip-hop artist Dessa.
