About Broken Oath
Broken Oath is a Hong Kong take on Japan’s Lady Snowblood. Directed by Jeong Chang-hwa (King Boxer), the film stars Angela Mao, the first lady of kung fu cinema. The story follows Lotus (Mao), who is orphaned and raised by Buddhist nuns. After being exiled for her violent tendencies and dedication to martial arts, Lotus discovers the truth about her past. Her father, a respected member of the Imperial Court, was murdered, and her mother gave birth to her in a jail cell after being unjustly imprisoned. With a mission of vengeance, Lotus, armed with her martial arts skills and a nest of scorpions, sets out to track down the men responsible for her family’s downfall. She is joined by Bruce Leung (Magnificent Bodyguards), adding to the film’s intense action sequences.
Made at the height of Angela Mao’s fame, following roles in Hapkido, Lady Whirlwind, Enter the Dragon, and When Taekwondo Strikes, Broken Oath stands out as one of her best films. The action choreography, orchestrated by Hsia Hsu (Drunken Master) and Yuen Woo-ping (The Matrix), adds to the film’s acclaim.
