People love songbirds.
“Emptying the Skies” is a documentary based on a New Yorker essay by Jonathan Franzen. Songbird populations have been declining around the world for the last 50 years. Across Europe, a team of bird lovers are working on ways to fight poachers and create ways to keep the birds from being trapped in what would be sure death. Some have compared the film to The Cove, but that’s not really true. The birds are just being shot, while the dolphins of The Cove were gutted.
While death is the end result, the Songbirds are literally no different than any other poached animal. Well, the Songbirds are pretty. It’s amazing how much aesthetic can push a documentary into creation. The DVD comes with a featurette and a trailer. The movie isn’t overpowering, but it demands a viewing.
