A Glimpse into Lee Michaels’ Career
Lee Michaels was a pivotal figure in the San Francisco music scene during the late 1960s, known for his performances on the Hammond B3 organ. Signed to A&M Records in 1967, he released seven albums with the label between 1967 and 1973. Michaels continued to record music for Columbia Records and his own Squish Records label until 1981. His hit single “Do You Know What I Mean” remains a staple on classic rock stations nationwide.
In 2015, Manifesto Records reissued The Complete A&M Album Collection, a 7-CD box set, along with Heighty Hi: The Best of Lee Michaels, available as both a single CD and LP. These reissues, after a 15-year absence from print, were a significant success, reaffirming Michaels’ place in the annals of classic rock.
Beyond Music
Michaels’ interests extend far beyond music. In 1988, he opened Killer Shrimp, a popular restaurant in Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles, which he and his family continue to operate. He also owned and operated a boxing gym, managed a professional boxer, and had several exotic pets, including tigers and cheetahs. His inventive spirit has led to numerous creations, adding another layer to his diverse resume.
Why a Podcast?
When asked why he decided to start a podcast now, Michaels explained, “Everyone’s been telling me that I need to share my crazy stories of all of my crazy and unique adventures and experiences, and that’s what I’m doing, and having a great time doing it.”
