CHINA SKY REVIEWED
“China Sky” is two movies in one film. One is a workplace melodrama about a married doctor flirting with his female doctor co-worker. He leaves and comes back having married a spoiled woman. The two women fight for the man’s attention, while Japan invades China. The American doctors work to help the wounded Chinese and to fight back against the Japanese. That’s where the second part of the film begins. Seeing so much Yellowface in one film is just a side effect of tackling films of this age. However, seeing Anthony Quinn as a Chinese man was jaw-droppingly bizarre.
The actors playing the Chinese guerillas do their best with the material. Still, it’s kinda hard to get Japanese actors to play themselves in a 1945 RKO movie. But, they could’ve done better than Anthony Quinn looking like a cartoon character. If you’re expecting a war movie, you’re out of luck. The war happens outside of the walls of what amounts to General Hospital by way of MASH in World War II.
