BELLADONNA OF SADNESS REVIEWED
“Belladonna of Sadness” is the last installment in an adult anime trilogy. Seeing as how I never saw the first two parts and might never get the chance, I was thoroughly lost. I get that the film is about a woman assaulted by a Lord on her wedding night. So, she makes a deal with the Devil to take her revenge. The result is another 90 minutes of trippy animation that is supposed to be symbolic. I like to think that I can read films, but I’ve never been so lost watching a film in my adult life.
A big deal was made about the 8 minutes added back into the film, but I couldn’t tell you where it was added. So much of the film feels less like a narrative and more like a visual journey. I guess it’s the traditional American in me, but I want clear cut stories. If you’re an animation nerd, then this is something for you. It’s just that every once in awhile an animated oddity drops into my lap that I have no idea how to process. Don’t worry, people. I’ll be back on my game very soon.
