This Christmas Gift Guide will update throughout the Holidays. Keep coming back to it for new info.
Each year we go through different iterations of the Christmas Gift Guide. This year with our art guys off living their lives, the interview team scattered to the four corners and the central team working around the clock on the latest site look, we decided to try something different. What exactly? Let’s use all of our modern junk to make a souped-up version of the old style Gift Guides.
2024 Gift Guide Table of Contents
White Elephant and Last Minute Gifts for Annual Obligations
Not often enough do these Christmas Gift Guides make sections based on cheaper offerings. We all have Holiday parties, forgotten relatives, overlooked friends and White Elephant parties to attend. What’s something easy we can pick up?
Lower-tier Movie Selections
Plenty of Blu-rays and 4K UHD movies are reasonably priced for Black Friday. As you get ready to head out or get ready for online buying, here are some AndersonVision titles that we recommend to buy. Let’s kick off the Christmas Gift Guide right!
Lower-tier Book Selections
People should still try to read, so help them out. Here some books we recommend for the readership. Check out some light and affordable reading as the Christmas Gift Guide continues.
Mid-tier Movie Selections
The Criterion sale will be ending next week at Barnes and Noble. For those wanting to take advantage of the 50% off the MSRP, now is the time to catch up on the best of Criterion in 2024.
Goin’ South 4K UHD
Vinegar Syndrome’s new sub-label Cinematographe is killing it with their releases in 2024. They kicked things into high gear with Goin’ South and AndersonVision thinks it is well worth having.
North by Northwest (1959) 4K UHD
Warner Brothers continues to shine with the stellar catalog releases of their deep library. To say that North by Northwest stands among the best 4K releases of 2024 is an understatement. Peak 4K transfer followed up by a Dolby Atmos track that makes a 1959 film feel like it was released last week is impeccable. This is among the most highest recommends in the Christmas Gift Guide.
Blazing Saddles 4K UHD
Blazing Saddles is another classic Warner Brothers release with a stunning 4K UHD. What makes it even better is that it’s been out for over two weeks without some Twitter slack making a claim that it’s been improperly touched-up in 3 frames in one scene buried in the movie. That’s an inside baseball joke, but this is another release sporting the Dolby Atmos-TrueHD tracks that WB is bringing out for their older releases.
The Terminator 4K UHD
The Terminator however had a controversy where two nerds that barely watch non MCU movies claimed that AI made Linda Hamilton’s eyeballs disappear in one scene. Watching the mini Civil War erupt out of nowhere over it was fascinating. But watching a non Motion Smooth’d 4K presentation of a James Cameron movie was worth it for me.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) 4K UHD
A Nightmare on Elm Street might be a little creepy for Christmas, however everyone loves horror.
The Hitcher (1986) 4K UHD
While I love the Second Sight release, it’s worth noting that the transfer on the Warner Brothers disc is virtually the same. However, if you dig the exotic packaging and more special features, you’re going to want to go Region Free.
Dr. Seuss How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1967) 4K UHD
Silent Night, Deadly Night (198) 4K UHD
Silent Night, Deadly Night finally comes to 4K UHD with a stunning release. Now, I wasn’t expecting a ton since we’ve been covering the movie on the site since the Anchor Bay DVD days.
The Dead Don’t Hurt Blu-ray
There are some Blu-rays in our Christmas Gift Guide. Check out one of the best Westerns of 2024 with this criminally underseen film. It’s not Open Range, but what is? The Christmas Gift Guide continues.
Rock N Roll High School (1978) 4K UHD
Rock N Roll High School is one of my favorite films of all time. Seriously, I’ve been obnoxiously into the Ramones since before it became a Zoomer thing to do before they all discovered Zyns.
Labyrinth (1986) 4K UHD Limited Edition Steelbook
Shout Factory has been doing right by the Henson films of my youth. Plus, all of the YouTube kids love 4K Steelbooks. Naturally, it was a match made in nerdy heaven. The Christmas Gift Guide continues with a look at Dark Crystal.
The Dark Crystal 4K UHD Limited Edition Steelbook
The Dark Crystal 4K UHD Steelbook is another big Shout Factory entry into the Christmas Gift Guide.
Mid-tier Book Selections
For those that aren’t big on comics we have options.
But, for those that like comics we have options.
Break out the wallet for the big-tier
The wallet will start to scream as we get into the Big-tier section of the Christmas Gift Guide.
Big-tier Movie Selections
Arrow Video continues to bring the goods with their Shaw Brothers offerings. Shawscope Volume 3 arrives early next week, but it’s another winner.
Big-tier TV Selections
Go big or go home with the Christmas Gift Guide. Let’s start talking TV.
Game of Thrones: Complete Series 4K UHD
If you haven’t finished Game of Thrones yet, why not finish it in 4K?
House of The Dragon Season 1 and 2 4K UHD
Both seasons are on sale for a reasonable price this season. So, we figured why not include House of the Dragon 4Ks into this massive guide?
Friends: The Complete Series 4K UHD
The last time I actively watched Friends was the episode that aired right after the Super Bowl. Julia Roberts did something with her underwear and there was a monkey. Now, I’m rewatching all of it in 4K UHD.
Ted Lasso: The Richmond Way Blu-ray
Ted Lasso represents my issues with the Apple TV+ shows. All have good premises behind them, but by the time I finish a watch…I’m left wondering why am I paying for yet another streaming service. There comes a point where diminishing returns kicks in, as I stare at my Apple TV+ dashboard full of shows I watched early, the awful Patriots Dynasty documentary hack job and a few catalog movies finally in 4K UHD.
But, the Blu-ray comes with a Believe poster. That’s a tie in. Still, for those of you who don’t want another streaming service, pick up Ted Lasso: The Richmond Way to see everything you have missed so fr.
Whitest Kids U Know: Complete Series DVD
As much as I love and know that the episodes of Whitest Kids U Know are available in HD, getting a DVD release of the episodes with added material is a coup. Shout Factory gets it really right about 3-4 times a year and they killed it here. Now, some watching fan rips on YouTube are going to stick with what they’ve been doing since The Civil War on Drugs, but I say pick up the DVD release and introduce new fans. RIP to one of the site’s first interview subjects Trevor Moore.
