Wuthering Heights gets a new fascinating release. Back in the 1950s, Dupont Show of the Month would put on star studded broadcasts featuring big actors of the day. While staging literary adaptations is more the forte of PBS now, it was intriguing to see major corporations and network TV trying to be so highbrow back in the Golden Age.
The DVD comes with the original commercials from the 1958 broadcast. That’s because the presentation is from a kinescope. The best way to describe a kinescope to casual viewers is that most vintage TV broadcasts only survive as recordings of the original live feeds. So many networks destroyed all of their old masters and that’s why a lot of TV from the 1940s through mid 1960s doesn’t exist.
Who gets the blame for that one, the boomers or the Greatest Generation?
