WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM

WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM REVIEWED

“Where the Buffalo Roam” meant well by trying to introduce Hunter S. Thompson to a larger population. What resulted was two passionate actors whiffing what could’ve been an easy film. Peter Boyle plays a Latin lawyer as a primordial ancestor to Gallagher. Bill Murray tries so hard to make a depiction of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson work for all parties. Unfortunately, it’s a political movie with humor and ideology so broad that it just doesn’t work.

So, what works? Well, bits of the tone would later be co-opted for Terry Gilliam’s work in 1998. But, a lot of that movie succeeded by having Johnny Depp get inside Thompson’s mind. What Bill Murray does in this movie is a fan’s loving impersonation. Producer/Director Art Linson exercised a great deal of control over the final product. It’s just that a heavy handed editor could’ve saved the film. Why don’t movies like this get fan edits?

The interview with the screenwriter helped to explain a ton of the choices. But, I still don’t feel like I should flee to the special features to make a film work.
