WEIGHT OF THE NATION, THE 3

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Continuing the tradition of 2007’s Addiction and 2009’s The Alzheimer’s Project in spotlighting the nation’s most pressing health issues, HBO addresses the issue of obesity in The Weight of the Nation, an initiative that will help launch one of the most far-reaching public health campaigns on this epidemic to date. Developed in partnership with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and in association with some of the world’s foremost health-research organizations. Three years in the making, The Weight of the Nation spotlights the facts and myths of this public-health crisis, showing how obesity affects the health of the nation and cripples the health care system.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“The Weight of the Nation” is a series of short documentaries that focuses on why you’re so damn fat. I hate to put the blame back on the victims, but we already know who the perps are in this situation. So, what can we do? We break down the areas that need focus and we highlight them. It’s everything from fatty foods to HFCS to lack of exercise.

The material is amazing, but not direct enough to capture a large audience. The focus on the young was reason enough for this to have aired on a major network and not on HBO. However, we can guess at why this pertinent information was contained to a smaller audience. Making people fat is a business and business is a’boomin.

The DVD comes with bonus short films and a booklet. The A/V Quality is on par for a documentary in standard definition. Still, it doesn’t look that amazing. I’ve got to learn when to stop projecting certain items. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
