VOICES, THE 8

“The Voices” came onto my radar because of Marjane Satrapi. The lady that made “Persepolis” demands my complete and undivided attention regardless of the project. It didn’t hurt that it was a movie about a man losing his mind and starting to take orders from his pets. The severed heads or interesting cast didn’t hurt either. So, what kept this flick from being a far bigger mainstream success?

Bloody violence still has this impact on the movie-going public when it’s not dressed in a certain way. If it’s cartoonish and versus a mindless horde, it’s acceptable. However, when you sympathize with the perpetrator that’s attacking innocent people, the masses avoid it in droves. Humanity demands seeing villains in its fiction, but they can’t ever seem to understand nuance. Ryan Reynolds lives his character in that nuance and he nails every moment onscreen.

The Blu-Ray comes with featurettes, animatics, deleted/extended scenes, sketch gallery and a Digital HD copy as the special features. The A/V Quality is astonishing for a quirky comedy drama. The 1080p transfer shows detailed depth during the many night scenes. Plus, the DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track makes the close quarters action come to life. If the trailer hasn’t sold you, then let me. This was one of the greatest indie films of last year and you need to have it in your life.
