Viva Kids Stocks Up: Distributor Lands Three Animated Features, From Globe-Trotting Explorers to a Lonely Astronaut
The family-film label adds Treasure Trekkers, Space Cadet, and Pirate Mo and the Legend of the Red Ruby to its slate as it heads to the Annecy animation festival.
The independent family-animation space keeps quietly building, and Viva Kids just made a notable move to grow its corner of it. The distributor, the family-film label of Viva Pictures, has acquired North American rights to a trio of animated features: Treasure Trekkers, Space Cadet, and Pirate Mo and the Legend of the Red Ruby. The acquisition lands as Viva heads to the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where its recent release The Last Whale Singer is screening. Release dates for all three new titles are still to be announced.
For a label that has been steadily assembling a catalog of animated kids’ films, three pickups at once signals real ambition. Each brings a distinct flavor, and together they make for an eclectic, internationally sourced slate.
Treasure Trekkers
The most star-studded of the three, Treasure Trekkers is based on J.S. Friedman’s beloved children’s book series Maurice’s Valises, which follows young explorers on quests around the world. The books built their following on tales of discovery, friendship, and the idea that true treasure lies in compassion and connection, and the feature aims to bring that warmth to the screen. It is directed by Kevin Munroe, a writer on TMNT and My Little Pony: The Movie, and boasts an all-star voice cast including Alan Cumming of The Traitors, Jack McBrayer of 30 Rock, Greg Cipes and Tara Strong of Teen Titans Go!, Meredith Bull of Pinkalicious & Peterrific, and the great John DiMaggio. It is produced by B Water Animation Studios and Squeeze Studio Animation.
Space Cadet
The most artful pick is Space Cadet, directed by acclaimed musician and visual artist Kid Koala, also known as Eric San. The film tells the tale of astronaut Celeste, who launches into space on her first solo mission, leaving behind Robot, the guardian who raised her. Alone for the first time, each must confront what it means to let go, and as Celeste faces unexpected dangers in the vastness of space, her memories become her only compass. Described as a visually stunning meditation on connection and solitude told entirely through image and an original score by Kid Koala, the film features the voices of Karen and Emilíana Torrini, and comes from Outsider Films. It made a strong impression at Annecy last year, so its pickup is no surprise.
Pirate Mo and the Legend of the Red Ruby
Rounding out the slate is Pirate Mo and the Legend of the Red Ruby, a swashbuckling adventure adapted from Seeräubermoses by acclaimed German children’s author Kirsten Boie. Full of heart, guts, and hope for a better world, it follows a young girl whose goodness is matched only by her derring-do. Directed by Florian Westerman, the film is a sizable European co-production from Ulysses Filmproduktion, Letterbox Filmproduktion, Isla Molona, Arxlight, Lightbox Animation, and Arx Anima.
A Growing Family-Animation Brand
Here is the context that makes this slate worth watching. Viva has been on an acquisitive run, building a catalog aimed at North American family audiences. Recent successes include The Amazing Maurice, which Viva debuted at Sundance before a wide theatrical release, Night of the Zoopocalypse, and HITPIG, which played on more than 2,000 screens nationwide. Its release of The Pout-Pout Fish, starring Nick Offerman and based on the bestselling book series, opened in the box office top 10. The company also holds an equity stake in the 3D animation studio 3Doubles Producciones.
