THE VALLEY OF GWANGI REVIEWED
“The Valley of Gwangi” was a film that I used to watch a ton as a kid. Whenever you ponder how much media we have now, remember that literally everything was released to VHS in the 1980s. As such, I had a double feature tape of “The Beast of Hollow Mountain” and “Valley of Gwangi”. Both films feature Jurassic level threats living on as the bastard children of Kong. Growing up an X-Men fan, this scratched my little itch of having a version of The Savage Land onscreen. It’s amazing how tolerant fans could be in a Pre-Internet era.
For a G rated film, Gwangi and his pals’ attacks are quite brutal. If you can move past that for an all audiences movie, then there are several more eccentric touches to enjoy. The Witch Leader of the Gypsies telling them that the Valley is off-limits. The fact that everyone’s first response to seeing dinosaurs was to put them in a traveling circus show. Modern fans like to poke holes in issues of logic, but I buy this world. If a country rube could use a dinosaur to milk money off his pals, that action is going down.
