TO AUSCHWITZ & BACK REVIEWED

“To Auschwitz & Back” is a documentary that allows filmmaker Ron Small to capture the thoughts of a Holocaust survivor on camera. As time marches on and we start to lose more and more of these aged heroes, films like this become more important. Joe Engel was a teenager during his capture in Poland and can describe the Warsaw Ghetto in a way that we can’t gleam from survivors that were children. Sadly, all of the adults are gone and now Engel’s teenage memories are our best glimpse into such atrocities. The documentary blows by rather fast, so I recommend checking out the bonus materials. I wish we got more time spent on Engel’s work as a freedom fight. Hell, I enjoyed what I got and recommend checking it out.
