THREE O’ CLOCK HIGH: COLLECTOR’S EDITION REVIEWED
“Three O’ Clock High” used to be the film I added to VHS mixes to pad out the six hour run time. I never quite got the comedy of the film as a kid. Seeing it as a 6 year old, the film played like a stark vision of what was to come in the 9th grade. Time passes and I pick up on the subtle laughs. Plus, it’s amazing how dumb the central conceit with Richard Lynch’s bully plays out.
Phil Joanou has never been one of those directors that blew my hair back. A lot of movie nerds are starting a modern re-appreciation for the guy’s work, which I assume only spurred the release of this film to Blu. What I enjoyed about the film plays to the aesthetics. Barry Sonnenfeld’s cinematography, the Tangerine Dream score and the short run-time just blasts through most expectations. That being said, the film doesn’t quite gel.
Time is a fickle bitch, so it shouldn’t surprise that someone in their 30s can’t totally relate to High School drama. But, I didn’t take this material that seriously as a High School either.
