The Flash: The Complete Series (1990) [Blu-ray review]

The Flash finally gets the Blu-ray complete series treatment from Warner Archive. While that might not be a big deal for kids now, it would be huge to elementary school aged me. Hell, CBS and DC had a contest game that I followed at K-Mart just to enjoy more stuff about the show. But, why? The series was this bizarre hodgepodge of the Loebs run by way of being a science cop drama and touches of the Silver Age characters. It’s this weird slam jam of so many influences brought to you by the team that would help kill Bart Allen decades later. Don’t worry, kids. Impulse got better.

Let’s talk 1990’s The Flash

CBS is the most bizarre network. Not so much back then, when they were trying things that would fare at any network. Sitcoms, weird setups, standard dramas and I think Brooklyn Bridge showed up the year after The Flash debuted. So when The Flash showed up in his Batman inspired stiff suit, I was thrilled. It was the early 1990s and we had zero expectations. Batman (1989) was the anomaly and the sky was wide open for what could happen next. Hell, this is around the time I became a Howard the Duck devotee.

Can the personal stories and tell us about the Blu-ray

Warner Archive brings The Flash: The Original Series to a massively packaged Blu-ray set. You get 6 discs loaded to the brim with the full first season. Honestly, by the time I finished the release and got to see the cleaned up presentation, it made me wistful that we didn’t get more. John Wesley Shipp was a pretty solid Flash and the creative team behind the show would write The Rocketeer the following summer.

There is a lot to like here, even without substantial special features. So if you’re an older fan or someone willing to take a chance on an older superhero. Give it a shot. The A/V Quality is pretty impressive for a show of its age that I swore was shot on video at one point. But, I guess it wasn’t. The DTS-HD 2.0 mono track does what it can for early 90s stereo mixes.
