TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE PART 2 REVIEWED
“Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2” is part of the perfect horror duology. It’s a shame that they had to keep making more movies. Tobe Hooper got that he was never going to top his original, but he needed to flip the perspective on what made Part 1 work. Taking an easy payday from his pals at Cannon, Hooper created the kinda film that should’ve worked for Dante with “Gremlins 2”. A creator laughing at the absurdity of his initial creation.
Somewhere between Dennis Hopper working as the ultimate Texas Ranger and Bill Moseley trying to go for the geek Oscar, the film finds its voice. A never-ending Texas joyride to a cannibalistic apocalypse soaked in mesquite sauce with a side of peppercorns. While the film runs short, there’s a wealth of bonus scenes and featurettes to keep you going through repeat viewings. Finally seeing the cleaned up Joe Bob Briggs scene is worth the price of admission. For some reason, I thought the old MGM DVD made most of the cut scenes look like they were driven through dirt.
Scream Factory did this release right and I hope that MGM, FOX and Universal keep opening the backlog to them. Classic horror deserves a proper release and Scream gets how to do it.
