Suzannah Weiss, performing under the name Shoshanna Blanca, is expanding the audience for Jesus Christ Pornstar, a provocative multimedia art project built around a question organized religion has spent a few thousand years making complicated: what if spirituality and sexual freedom aren’t mutually exclusive?
The project mixes body art, music, prayer, educational material and erotic performance while examining the connections between divinity, sexuality, gender and the human body.
If the title Jesus Christ Pornstar wasn’t enough of a warning, Weiss isn’t particularly interested in approaching those subjects quietly.
Biblical Stories Get a Very Different Reading
Two ongoing series form the backbone of the project.
The Second Cumming reinterprets Jesus and Mary Magdalene through a psychedelic examination of enlightenment, forgiveness and love. Uncovering Eve turns its attention toward women and womanhood, pushing back against religious traditions that have associated the female body with sin, temptation and punishment.
Other installments take the concept in even stranger directions.
Hysterical Literature Bible Readings combines sexual expression with prayer as a way of exploring religious ecstasy. Jesus Lessons mixes BDSM-inspired performance with sex education, while The Porn Psychic brings Weiss’s experience as a psychic medium into tongue-in-cheek predictions about the apocalypse.
Taken together, Jesus Christ Pornstar isn’t simply trying to shock Sunday school teachers. Weiss is using familiar religious imagery to question why faith and physical pleasure have so frequently been presented as opposing forces.
“I created Jesus Christ Pornstar to explore what happens when we stop treating the body as a problem religion needs to solve,” Weiss said.
“I want people to feel at home in their faith and in themselves without measuring their purity against someone else’s rules. A spiritual life can make room for curiosity, respect and pleasure.”
Suzannah Weiss Has Been Asking These Questions for Years
The project connects directly to Weiss’s broader work as a feminist writer, sex educator and author.
For roughly a decade, she has written about women’s bodies, sexual agency and pleasure. Her books include Subjectified: Becoming a Sexual Subject and Eve’s Blessing: Uncovering the Lost Pleasure Behind Female Pain, the latter receiving the 2026 AASECT Book Award for General Audience.
Weiss is currently pursuing a PhD in clinical sexology, where her academic research brings her back to the same intersection explored by Jesus Christ Pornstar. Her dissertation focuses on religious sex workers and the ways they reconcile their work with personal faith.
That makes the performance project less of a detour from her academic and writing career than another method of asking many of the same questions.
Can someone reject traditional ideas about sexual purity without rejecting spirituality? Can religious imagery be reclaimed by people whose bodies or sexual identities have historically been treated as problems requiring correction? And what happens when Eve gets to tell her side of the story?
Jesus Christ Pornstar intends to find out.
