SUNSET BOULEVARD Returns in 4K: Restored Classic Hits Theaters, Digital, and Broadway in 2025

SUNSET BOULEVARD, Billy Wilder’s noir masterpiece and one of the most searing commentaries ever made about Hollywood, is back.

The newly restored 4K version of the 1950 classic returns to U.S. theaters on August 3 & 4 courtesy of Paramount Pictures and Fathom Events, following its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

Then, just like Norma Desmond planned, it hits your home screens in crystal-clear 4K Ultra HD—available now to buy or rent digitally, complete with two hours of legacy extras. If you’re ready for your close-up, there’s never been a better time.

One of the Greats. Still Is.

Originally released August 10, 1950, Sunset Boulevard:

  • Was selected early for the National Film Registry
  • Made AFI’s Top 20 Greatest American Films of All Time
  • Scored 11 Oscar® nominations (including Best Picture)
  • Won 3: Best Art Direction, Best Score, and Best Writing

Gloria Swanson is Norma Desmond.
William Holden is Joe Gillis.
Erich von Stroheim plays Max in one of the best “ex-husband/butler” performances in history.
Nancy Olson plays Betty—the sane one.

Wilder’s script hits hard. The black comedy, the noir, the eerie prescience. It’s a film about fame, delusion, and rot. TikTok just added filters to help you look like Norma. That says everything.

4K Restoration Details

The new 4K release pulls from a 35mm duplicate negative, with:

  • Reference scans provided by the Library of Congress
  • A full digital restoration faithful to Wilder’s vision
  • An all-new 5.1 audio mix, isolated using tech from Park Road Post (New Zealand) and Deluxe Audio

This isn’t just cleanup—it’s historical film preservation with purpose. For once, Hollywood cleaned something up and made it better.

Film Synopsis

“Fame isn’t forever—just ask Norma Desmond.”

Joe Gillis is a broke screenwriter. Norma Desmond is a relic of the silent film era. She lures him in with promises of work and glamour, but what unfolds is less a resurrection and more a slow-motion spiral into madness.

It’s film noir. It’s Hollywood horror.
It’s cautionary tale meets character study.
It’s Sunset Boulevard, and it might be more relevant now than in 1950.

Final Word

This isn’t just a rerelease. It’s a full court press.

  • Theater reissue
  • Digital 4K release
  • Tony-winning Broadway revival
  • New cast album
  • 50th anniversary packaging and merchandising likely incoming

Whether you’re watching for the first time or revisiting to catch all the dark glances and stares, now’s the time.

She is big.
It’s just the format that got bigger.
