STAKEOUT ON DOPE STREET REVIEWED
“Stakeout on Dope Street” is hilariously out of date. Starring three teen actors including Corman Rep Player Superstar Jonathon Haze, the film shows what happens when the kids start riding the horse. After a police raid, three teens stumble upon two pounds of heroin. What do they do? Well, they come up with about 100 nicknames for the white stuff, then they listen to Jazz. While the Jazz music plays, they start shooting up and debasing themselves.
It’s funny to look back at the film, as it was meant to be a serious expose at the time. But, it’s Seymour from Little Shop of Horrors getting destroyed while the director of Robocop 2 frames the action. In terms of drug message pictures, I’m stunned that this film isn’t better remembered. While the movie is rich with melodrama, the rampant comedic drug use needs to be adored. The mob plot to get back the heroin feels like that Season 2 or 3 episode of Sunny. But, that was meant to be funny. Throughout every inch of this film, you get the feeling that somebody wanted this to matter. That makes it funnier.
