SPINNING MAN REVIEWED
“Spinning Man” is a film about how one decides truth. Outside of that one beat, there’s nothing else going on in the movie. Pierce Brosnan and Guy Pearce spend the entire movie waiting for the hypothetical Kato to leap out of the shadows at them. But, it never happens. In other scenes, you have Minnie Driver starting to realize that her husband is a scumbag that sleeps with his female students. She seemingly lives in her own movie, while Brosnan and Pearce have a truth-telling pissing match.
The script is well-written and the direction works for an adult drama. Yet, it feels like parody at times. How many times do we need to have people keep trying to trip each other up on wording? This is a drama for people that don’t understand what detectives do or how crimes are solved. I’d call it an episode of The Rockford Files, but James Garner wouldn’t allow this on his show. So, what’s the takeaway?
When you try to make a movie about crime shaking up identity, then the crime starts to matter less and less. A tighter edit could’ve refocused the movie. Oh well, your parents will love it.
