“South Park” returns for a wonderful 18th season on Blu-Ray. Changing things up this year, Parker and Stone sought to have a sustained continuity throughout the season. Butters’ tortures the gym, the boys ostracize their friends and Randy living as Lorde pervaded throughout the run. All the while you get to learn about the dangers of Gluten, the need for special bathrooms and the dangers of holographic gangster rappers. Honestly, it’s the best season they’ve had in years.
But, what does this mean for you? If you like the high concepts of exploring virtual reality or going deep on social commentary, this might be for you. If you still long for the days of Towelie, then this show might have left you behind. The closest it gets back to that old humor is the Wacky Races episode, but that felt more like set dressing to focus on the Special Olympics kids. That being said, nothing beats the sheer joy of Randy performing Cock Magic for a kid filled birthday party.
The Blu-Ray comes with a social commentary on all episodes, mini-commentaries and deleted scenes as the special features. The A/V Quality is on par with the past few releases. The 1080p transfer is near reference quality. Along the way, the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 master audio track has raised the bar. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
