Comedy favorite Cedric The Entertainer is back on the pulpit in the second season of The Soul Man, the spiritual and side-splitting sitcom from Suzanne Martin (Hot In Cleveland). Former R&B superstar-turned-preacher Boyce “The Voice” Ballentine (Cedric) continues to find his footing in the transition from music to ministering in Season Two’s ten episodes, facing whatever challenges that come his way with grace and humor. Between a fiercely cutthroat choir competition, to an unexpected visit from an old flame, to the countless antics of his family, Boyce will need a miracle to keep it together! Season Two of The Soul Man also stars Niecy Nash (Reno 911) John Beasley (Everwood), Wesley Jonathan (What I Like About You), and Jazz Raycole (My Wife and Kids) with guest stars including Tim Reid (WKRP In Cincinatti), Yvette Nicole Brown (Community) and recording sensation Cee Lo Green! WHAT WE THOUGHT “The Soul Man” enters its second season with more of the same. It’s nice seeing a lot of actors that don’t get enough time on other shows. However, I also appreciate that they are willing to go to areas that you don’t expect. I love seeing a religious show where the leads aren’t terrified of tackling gay marriage. People are people and it’s nice to see a degree of respect. Cedric the Entertainer continues to prove that he’s a strong TV lead. However, ten episodes is not enough for a season. Comedy is all about timing, but we need character work. Take it for what you will, but it does function as an Old School throwback. That being said, at least “Amen” got full season orders. The DVD comes with two featurettes as the special features. The A/V Quality is sharp for standard definition. The transfer is strong, plus the Dolby 5.1 track kicks in well. Still, I can watch it in HD on TV Land. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to super fans. RELEASE DATE: 10/21/2014
