SISTERS: UNRATED

SISTERS REVIEWED

Sisters” is a film that’s almost funny. However, it runs nearly two hours and spends half of that lingering on the same five jokes. There are funny moments with Maya Rudolph, John Cena and Bobby Moynihan…but the movie needed an edit. Timing is key for comedy and four different times during the film it just dies midstream. Most of the time you can argue that the trailer spoils the best moments of the film. Well, this one is different.

Stretch that trailer to an hour and Universal just showed you half of the movie. Poehler and Fey land their jokes that are given room to fly or fail. It’s just that so much of the film stuffs in force dramatics or keeps trying to shoe-in subplots. If I was supposed to care about Tina Fey’s relationship with her daughter, it never happened. But, I do love that John Cena played a drug dealer named Pazuzu. “Sisters” isn’t terrible, it’s just very forgettable.

Viewing it again on home video has allowed for some time to let the material breathe. Couple that with an unrated cut that actually lets some jokes develop and breaks away from the theatrical’s plot drops and you’ve got a film that will probably age well on home video. Is the film still too long? Well, yeah. But, the unrated cut actually lets characters develop and you get the time to care about why the party is happening.
