THE PLOT THUS FAR

When five struggling single moms put aside their differences to form a support group, they find inspiration and laughter in their new sisterhood, and help each other overcome the obstacles that stand in their way.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

“The Single Moms Club” is a film about five single moms who form a support group. You get the African Americans, the new status inclined white ones and a Hispanic to cover the bases. I would comment on the lack of an LGBT inclined one, but I guess that’s a bridge too far for Tyler Perry. Watching these women learn how to bond is inspiring, but they also have the token issues blocking them from becoming fully realized humans. I would make a quick crack about the script, but I just can’t be bothered.

This is one of the few Tyler Perry movies that underperformed at the Box Office and I’m not sure why that happened. Was it because this movie broke out of the African American target audience mode? If that’s the case, then why did “Peeples” bomb too? If anything, I feel that the Tyler Perry model has slipped into an area that has already been well treaded by tons of others. Examining the middle class is old hat, even if it’s in decline. There’s no inherent drama in mild displacement or disagreements among people who are still fairing well. Plus, it feels like betraying the original audience a bit. But, I guess you do what you need to do to impress TBS and Oprah.

The Blu-Ray comes with a Digital HD copy and featurettes as the special features. The A/V Quality is typical for past Tyler Perry home video releases. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track is pretty flat across all channels. The 1080p transfer gets a bit more to show off. In the end, I’d recommend a rental or stream to the curious.
