“Shadowman” is about the rise of Richard Hambleton in the 1980s. While he was part of the emerging NYC art scene, his dark tar figures never seemed to take off in the way of a Basquiat. Many talking heads on the documentary keep talking about how he was a Van Gogh in the wings. Well, the guy was making these dark figures everywhere and nobody really seemed to care about the Shadowman. Hell, I still don’t see the draw of his art years later. Check out the bonus footage after you finish the main documentary. It explains a lot more, but never gives a true purpose behind the art.
