Rumble (2021) [Blu-ray review]

Rumble takes place in a world where monsters and humans coexist, but monster wrestling is forbidden. The story centers around Winnie, a young girl who dreams of becoming a professional monster wrestler. Against all odds, she sets out to make her dream a reality and in doing so becomes an inspiration to us all.

Rumble packs stunning animation

One of the standout features of “Rumble” is its stunning animation. The monsters are beautifully designed, with each one possessing a unique look and personality. The attention to detail in the animation is impressive, and the fight scenes are incredibly well-choreographed, making for some truly stunning moments. The use of color and light is also exceptional, creating a world that feels both fantastical and believable.

The voice acting in “Rumble” is also noteworthy. Will Arnett delivers a standout performance as the grizzled coach, and Terry Crews is a perfect fit as the enthusiastic monster wrestler, Tentacular. Even the minor characters are well-cast and add depth to the story.

You’ve seen this movie before

The plot of “Rumble” is predictable at times, but it’s still enjoyable. The movie’s message about the importance of following your dreams and fighting for what you believe in is uplifting and inspiring. The film also tackles themes of acceptance and diversity, as the monsters in the movie represent marginalized groups, and their struggle for acceptance mirrors that of real-life marginalized communities.

However, the movie is not without its flaws. The pacing can be a bit uneven at times, and some of the supporting characters feel underdeveloped. Additionally, the humor in the movie is hit or miss, with some jokes falling flat and others landing perfectly.

Well, my wife loved the music

The music in “Rumble” is another mixed bag. While some of the songs are catchy and memorable, others feel forgettable and generic. The movie’s soundtrack includes tracks by popular artists such as Imagine Dragons and Anderson .Paak, but unfortunately, these songs don’t always mesh well with the film’s tone.

Overall, “Rumble” is a movie that manages to be both fun and thought-provoking. Its stunning visuals and entertaining plot will appeal to children and adults alike, while its deeper themes make it a movie that can be appreciated on multiple levels. While the movie has its flaws, it’s still a charming and enjoyable experience that’s well worth watching.

What’s on the Blu-ray?

Rumble is another typical recent animation movie on disc from the powerhouse team at Paramount. The A/V Quality is phenomenal for a 1080p transfer. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track really pops off during the fight scenes. But, let’s talk about the transfer. It’s why I took a few screenshots to highlight it.

I know we’re all getting into the 4K UHD era. Hell, the fans practically twisted Criterion’s arm to meet us in the modern era. Now, we’re starting to get 1080p transfers that look like upscales. I mean, this disc looks better than how I watched it on Paramount Plus. What is up with that?

While it’s nice you get a digital code, I wish that we got some more special features. The Blu-ray comes with deleted scenes, a featurette about the wrestling stars and a look at the playbook. Plus, a ton of similar special feature material about the production and the world of Rumble. I never read the source story, as my kids were a little too young for it at the time.

Now, I wish I knew more about Rumble. It’s not the most in-demand thing in their world, but it holds their attention. So, I guess that’s a vote of confidence.

Rumble is now streaming on Paramount Plus and available on Blu-ray
