ROARING ABYSS REVIEWED
“Roaring Abyss” wants to be Buena Vista Social Club so bad. The music takes a back burner, as the film wants you to understand Ethiopian culture. The film spotlights several musicians who grew up in poverty and missed out on formal education. Yet, their parents or older band members crafted instruments seemingly being lost to time. Each musician learned how to play their instrument in a way that didn’t sound like anything in the West. What makes the film matter so much is how they wonder if their material will ever be heard for what it is. A culture’s last grasp at an identity.
