PEGGY GUGGENHEIM: ART ADDICT REVIEWED
“Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict” is a documentary collected through audio tapes by the late Peggy Guggenheim. She was never an art expert, but appreciated what art could do to promote herself. She loved the artists she met and seemed slightly jealous of their talents. Still, the lady collected probably the greatest art collection of the 20th Century. The documentary tries to answer why Guggenheim felt the urge to do just that.
This is a woman that grew up alongside the great Art movements of the 20th Century. Wherever art was happening, she had to be there. What’s more important is that she used her family wealth to give galleries to fringe artists that would otherwise go ignored. The levels of her patronage are not to be ignored. That being said, the documentary doesn’t try to make her into a Saint. Guggenheim’s own words frame her as a rather enthusiastic fan.
