OUTSIDERS: SEASON ONE

OUTSIDERS REVIEWED

“Outsiders” is part of WGN’s fascinating attempt to carve its own original programming line-up to compete with the rise of FX, TBS and other similar natured channels. Dabbling in cable TV’s fascination with Eastern KY, we get to follow the hill folk of Eastern Kentucky. Yes, there really is a Shay Mountain. No, the people that live there don’t really look like this. Most of them are chunkier, but there are a few redneck hairballs.

The show is a quick 13 episode romp that plays like “Justified” by way of “Sons of Anarchy”. That being said, David Morse is no Ron Perlman. He portrays menace well, but there are very few other notes to toot on that horn. I’d like to see what comes out of a second season, as so much of this year was spent on world building. Joe Anderson is starting to impress me as a series lead, but I need more scenes with him. Season 2 is already confirmed to be arriving on WGN next year, so watch the show now and seem ahead of the curve.
