“Outcast” feels like a spiritual successor of “Season of the Witch”. Not the Halloween sequel that I dig, but the rather obvious tax shelter that Cage farted out a few years back. Actors taking films for the money has to be one of my throwbacks to Old School Hollywood. That being said, I don’t appreciate a talent like Cage disappearing to Europe to make tired material with Hollywood never-beens. Sorry, prequel fans.
Nicolas Cage plays this mysterious badass that works to help Hayden Christensen overcome the machinations of his older brother. It’s a battle for the throne, but does it matter? We’ve known spent most of the last decade watching medieval fantasy tell us what goes into serious political pulp. Should an audience stand to watch moody plotting and shifting direction in this day and age? If you’re not getting a healthy dose of nudity or Peter Dinklage to pad it out, the answer is NO.
The Blu-Ray comes with an interview, featurette and a trailer as the special features. The A/V Quality is pretty strong for a low budget period piece. The 1080p transfer pops for what amounts to a lackluster riff on the medieval fiction flick. However, the 5.1 track is lossy to the point of being distracting. In the end, I’d recommend it to the curious.
