OKLAHOMA (1999): SHOUT BROADWAY

OKLAHOMA (1999) REVIEWED

Is it weird to say that I prefer this version of “Oklahoma” to the classic version? I used to think it’s weird, but Jackman has been winning me over. While the presentation is 3 hours long and previously reviewed on this site…it works. How many times can you keep cutting out Oklahoma in a way that doesn’t ape Fred Zinnemann? The dream like nature of the film isn’t here, but you do get characters playing far better in a shared stage.

I love that Shout is treating its Broadway entries with such love. However, there probably needs to be far more mainstream appeal with the material. Deep cuts are great and I wish the Scream portion delved there more. It’s just that musicals have a fixed space in the public consciousness. Hugh Jackman is an entry point. But, this was Jackman right before he landed the Wolverine role for the first time. Oh well, the people that are going to buy this one are the ones that can name the original Dream Curly.
