NAPPING PRINCESS

NAPPING PRINCESS REVIEWED

“Napping Princess” is also known as Ancien and the Magic Tablet in some circles. For others, I’ll break it down. It’s about a sleepy girl who dreams of motorcycles and Top Gear level stuff to save the day. Her dad gets kidnapped and now she has to team up with a friend to get him back. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics are also ramping up, so I guess this makes this a semi-futuristic movie? The animation is bright and flowing. The downer is that the execution leaves a ton to be desired.

When the actual mission of rescuing Kokone’s dad starts, it doesn’t really have an endgame. The duo bounces through the dreamworld of Heartland, as they meet movie NPCs and other weirdness to eventually get to Pops. But, does it matter? The film feels like a giant marker for my problems with anime. I love the ideas and the animation, but the story is lacking. It’s not enough to be pretty and try to push an audience into what you want.

If this is your thing, you’ll enjoy it. Other people will find themselves needing a map to navigate through this one.
